“May No One Go Hungry”

May 3, 2010, Larchmont, NYThe Junior League of Westchester on the Sound (JLWOS) kicked off its annual "May No One Go Hungry Campaign," at the Boys & Girls Club of New Rochelle, Remington Unit.

JLWOS members and their children donated and delivered enough healthy snacks to the Boys & Girls Club of New Rochelle so that all 161 children who use the club will be able to have one free and healthy snack each day in the month of May (see picture below).

For the second part of the campaign, JLWOS will hold its general membership meeting at the New Rochelle Boys and Girls Club on May 18th, from 4:30 – 6:30 pm.  The JLWOS Sound Shore Medical Center Health Initiative Committee will lead the group in educating approximately 60 children about healthy snacks, better nutrition and fun exercises.

The children will learn a lesson based on the book by David Zinczenko, Eat This Not That, and they will leave the club with a backpack filled with healthy snacks donated by JLWOS members.

Additionally, JLWOS members plan to stock the pantry shelves of the Boys and Girls Club with healthy snacks, such as organic applesauce, low-fat granola bars, low-salt microwave popcorn, individual bags of healthy chip options and whole wheat crackers and baked pretzels.

“Working with the New Rochelle Boys and Girls Club for our May No One Go Hungry Campaign is a truly rewarding experience and is at the heart of the Junior League’s goal of helping women and children,” said Jennie McFarland, JLWOS President.  “By teaching the children fun ways to eat, live and maintain healthy habits at a young age, we’re providing them a better chance of healthy adulthood and perhaps they will take the message to their peers and families.”
